Grants for Professional Development in 2009
The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation has a fund, provided by the MacArthur Foundation, to support the professional development of artistic or administrative staff members of our arts & culture grant recipients. Please note: these grants are only open to current or recent grantees of The Driehaus Foundation. In 2009, the Driehaus Foundation paid out $38,423 in 26 grants for the professional development of grantee administrative or artistic staff members. The average size of these grants was $1,500. The smallest of these grants was $500; the largest was $3,000. The grants have been made to the following organizations:
1) Albany Park Theater Project for the associate Director to attend the Urban Bush Women’s 10-day summer leadership institute in New Orleans;
2) Arts & Business Council of Chicago for the Development Director to attend “The Art of Leadership” certificate program at Northwestern University’s School of Continuing Studies;
3) Arts Work Fund for Organizational Development for the Director to hire a coach to deepen her financial analysis skills;
4) Chicago Film Archives to two staff to attend the Orphan Film Symposium in New York City;
5) Clinard Dance Theater for 2 company members to extend their previously-planned trip to Syria in order to study the dances and music of Bedouin peoples of middle Syria;
6) DanceWorks Chicago for 2 company members to attend the Assocation of Performing Arts Presenters conference in New York;
7) Fulcrum Point New Music Project for the Executive Director to attend the Arts Reach National Arts Marketing & Development Conference in Los Angeles;
8) Global Girls for the Executive Director to attend the Conference for Community Arts Education in Minneapolis;
9) Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing for 2 staff members to attend Donors Forum workshops;
10) Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art to pay for the Program Coordinator to attend two classes to learn Dreamweaver, the software that runs on Intuit’s website;
11) Khecari to help the Artistic Director attend a movement workshop in Durham, N.C.;
12) League of Chicago Theatres to support 2 staff members to attend the Association of Performing Arts Service Organizations conference in San Francisco in March, 2010;
13) Lucky Plush Productions to support costs of sending 11 company members to a showcase at the Association of Performing Arts Presenters conference in New York;
14) Loyola University Museum of Art to support the Manager of Visitor Services, Museum Shop, Design and Publications to attendance at the Association of Midwest Museums conference in Minneapolis;
15) Molly Shanahan/Mad Shak to help cover the costs to join the Roster of Artists of Ivan Sygoda at Pentacle;
16) Momenta for the Associate Executive Director to take two online courses in Arts Management from Umass, Amherst;
17) Najwa Dance Corps for 3 company members to attend Kankoran’s 26th Annual African Dance and Drum Conference in Washington, D.C.;
18) Next Theatre Company to support the Marketing Director to attend the Arts Reach National Arts Marketing & Development Conference in Los Angeles;
19) Open Studio Project to support the attendance of two art therapists to attend the American Art Therapy Assocation Conference in Dallas;
20) The Lira Ensemble to pay an accountant for 10 hours of training for Lira staff on how to fully utilize Quickbooks;
21) The Orion Ensemble to help engage Shmuel Ashkenasi for 12 artistic coaching sessions and Bradley Williams for 5 jazz coaching sessions.
22) The House Theatre of Chicago for the Managing Director to take five courses for a Certificate of Professional Achievement in Nonprofit Management at the Kellof Center for Nonprofit Management at Northwestern University;
23) The Moving Architects for the Artistic Director to attend a choreography workshop at Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA;
24) The Seldoms, for two company members to attend the Association of Performing Arts Presenters conference in New York City;
25) Threewalls for one staff member to attend the Alliance of Artist Communities conference in New Orleans;
26) TimeLine Theatre Company to help pay for the costs to send 2 staff members to attend the Theatre Communications Group’s National Conference in Baltimore.
