Grant Decisions September 24, 2010
The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation approved the following grants on September 24, 2010 (all grants are to Chicago-area organizations unless noted otherwise):
For Arts:
-Arts Alliance Illinois: $15,000 for general operating support;
-Black Ensemble Theater: $20,000 for general operating support;
-Lawyers for the Creative Arts: $25,000 for each of two years for general operating support;
For The Built Environment:
-500 Years of the Illustrated Architecture Book: $10,000 to support a coalition of organizations sponsoring exhibits on architecture books that have shaped society;
-Archeworks: $25,000 for each of two years as a two-to-one challenge grant for general operating support;
-Chicago Art Deco Society: $15,000 to help with the first-ever Art Deco survey of Chicago;
-Doug Farr: $10,000 to support an exhibit at the Chicago Architecture Foundation that promotesgreen neighborhoods;
-Environmental Law & Policy Center: $20,000 matching grant to support their new eco-office in Chicago;
-The Experimental Station: $15,000 for general operations;
-Glessner House Museum: $14,900 to help finish restoration of the Isaac Scott exhibit room and the restoration of the parlor;
-Lakeview Action Coalition: $15,000 to support a community organizing campaign to ensure that the Children’s Memorial Hospital redevelopment plan includes affordable housing for economically and demographically diverse families and individuals;that it be environmentally responsible; and that historic buildings be preserved and re-used;
-Lane Tech Century Foundation/Lane Tech High School: $25,000 matching grant to repair WPA sculpture in the Lane Tech garden;
-Syracure University School of Architecture (Syracuse, NY): $10,000 to support the publications, "New Public Works," and "American City X";
-Unity Temple Restoration Foundation: $10,000 to restore 8 art-glass lancet windows in Unity Temple;
-Wagging Tale Productions (Oregon City, Oregon); $8,500 To support marketing of and DVD creation for the documentary film, “Conserving Our Future: Sustainability Through Building Reuse”;
For Economic Opportunity for the Working Poor:
-Arise: $7,500 for general operations of the Worker Center which addresses the needs of vulnerable workers through education, campaigns to improve workplace conditions, and public policy;
-Corporation for Supportive Housing: $15,000 to support to learn from best practices from other cities.-Chicago Housing Initiative (CHI)/Jane Addams Senior Caucus: $25,000 to provide salary support for CHI’s Coordinator and for travel expenses for local tenant leaders to go to Washington DC;
-Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law: $50,000 to improve economic opportunities for Illinois working families through stronger “work supports” policies;
From the General funding category:
-Cambodian Association of Illinois: $25,000 for each of two years to partially fund the salary of the new executive director, to facilitate a smooth leadership transition and strategic planning with the help of consultants, and to support the transition of founder Khompha Seth to the new role as President;
-Illinois Humanities Council: $5,000 to support a performance festival associated with the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides;
-Nomadic Productions: $25,000 for the documentary film, "All The Difference;"
-Taproot Foundation: $45,000 for general operating support for the Taproot Foundation in Chicago and to sponsor five Service Grants for Richard H. Driehaus Foundation grantees;
For Government Accountability/Investigative Reporting:
-American Independent News Network (formerly known as Center for Independent Media): $20,000 for coverage of The Working Poor;
-Center for Investigative Reporting: $25,000 for general operating support towards Midwest reporting;
-Homelands Productions (Ithaca, NY): $30,000 for support of “The Hunger Chronicles,” a radio and web-based investigative journalism project about the challenge to ensure that all people have access to adequate food;
-We The People Media: $15,000 to support the print, television and web-based reporting for and by people from Chicago's low-income community;
For Museums:
Chicago Cultural Alliance: $25,000 for general operating support plus $10,000 matching grant with each new individual, foundation and corporate grant;
